      ASMT competition

The experience in ASMT was full of thrill. I value the experience I got from it more than the outcome.

When I was informed from Stanford Math Tournament (SMT) that the mission of merging teams is all given to us, I was very worried. I have never actively contacted someone else for cooperation though I know this is one of my biggest drawbacks. And I knew this is time to be more interactive and overcome my passiveness. I contacted five individual teams for merging. But I got no response in a day. My worry grew even more. The next day, I got messages from two people I contacted. But they told me they were not going to attend the competition this year and wished me good luck instead. I felt horrible and hurried to send more emails to teams who have already gathered more than one people. Soon, I got a reply from a team of five and they agreed to merge me into their team. I felt no more lonely and there were two other people who replied me later to merge the team with me. I felt the feeling of accomplishment when I got to form the complete team of eight. So far so good.

On Feb.13th, just before the day of SMT, I was in the Los Angles airport waiting for the flight to San Francisco for competition. When I was checking the email, I got a message from one of my teammate and was informed that the SMT had been cancelled. I was so shocked when I confirmed this information on the SMT official website. The whole objective of coming to US has been flown away. But there was no time for disappointment. I registered for A Star Math Tournament (ASMT), which was offered instantaneously for alternative of SMT, though I had already missed several important information about it. Later I knew that all of my teammates were attending the ASMT, which was a lucky news.

On the day of competition, I met two of my teammates who were initially applied as team of one. But we could not have found the other teammates who were applied as a team of five. In the registration center, we found out that our team had checked in but none of three of us had our name on the team member list. The team already had seven member and had no room for us three. It was the team list completely different from the one I checked last night. We needed to find the team immediately to find out what on earth had happened. We three searched those teammates among several hundreds people. When we found them, their leader told us that they had already merged team themselves. I was very furious about what they did, because they didn`t informed us about the change to any of us. It was very irresponsible. But it had happened and could not be changed. We three had to merge the team of three though it means inferiority in the competition.

When we re-registered for the competition, it was almost the time for the power round. We tried our best to solve the problem while communicate with others. The individual portion of the test was just fine, but what was impressive on me was the team test. Weonsek Lee was a junior and he himself tole me and Salem that he might not be able to solve as much problem. He remained silent in the power portion. But on the team test, when Salem and I was struggling in the algebra problem, Weonsek came out with a brilliant idea about several geometry problem. He was very good at drawing and helped us to solve all of the geometric questions. I began to feel shame to myself and sorry to him because I initially thought he was incapable of this competition. I should never have looked down at anyone.
