UCSD campus tour

UCSD was as lively as the sunshine that was surrounding it. The overall atmosphere of UCSD attracted me a lot and several surprising elements hiding in the campus amazed me frequently too.

If UCLA had a library that very much resembles Harry Potter movie, UCSD was actually run by the "Harry Potter system". UCSD had six distinct colleges within it. These colleges have different philosophy which makes all of them to offer different courses of general education. For example, Marshall college emphasizes students' ability of dealing with the social problems. Thus it require the students to take several quarter of social science classes during the general education course. Students would rank their college preferences when they apply for UCSD and when they are admitted, they would be assigned to a specific college. When I asked the tour guide whether students can change the college if they don't like it, the tour guide answered that students can change the college but they occasionally do so. Because students would be influenced by the philosophy of their college and begin to love it. I imagined the time when I would be assigned to a certain college and could not wait to meet other students who would be assigned to the same college. It's might be so exciting! I think the division of the huge public college into six smaller colleges might help students to have more sense of belonging.

Library was in the center of the campus and it had the shape of two hands holding the source of knowledge. Since San Diego is immersed in beautiful weather all year long, library has the ground and outdoor floor to enable students to enjoy the sunshine. All floors of library require different "decibel". The bottom floors are used for presentation preparation and group discussion. As the store goes up, students need to be more and more quiet and the library is used mainly for silent self studying. I think this kind of arrangement is very efficient.

Since UCSD is famous for the Jacobs Engineering School, there were interesting buildings and arts hidden in the campus. Singing tree, speaking tree and falling roof are examples of interesting art creations. And it was these arts that relaxed me in the foreign environment. There were a lot of activities going on in the campus too. Students were holding the flee market and playing the music. Agendas for current issues were posted everywhere. Because UCSD has six colleges, there are six separate student unions organizing different activities, which makes the campus full of exciting things almost every day. Though UCSD had no classical buildings that I like, it compensated me with its lively atmosphere of modern university.

UCSD was run by the quarter system and each quarter ends before the winter, spring and summer break. Students live in the residential hall of their college during the school year. The campus was consist of half building half forest. It might be amazing to live away from the smogs and walk across the fresh green plants every day.

Overall, the environment and the atmosphere of UCSD was much more attractive for me than I have expected. And I was able to see myself in that busy campus.
